D-123 Manual
1. Introduction
After former experiences with class-D amplifiers, we at Hawk Audio wanted to create something small at an
even more reasonable price. Another consideration was we want to live in a “greener” world; less amplifier
power also means less energy consumption.
Over the past years, a range of integrated circuits (ICs) were developed including the generation of a switching
signal and the possibility to drive power transistors. Most of these circuits need extra circuitry for safety
purposes (current, tension and temperature control). Those circuits are less convenient for the active DIY audio
amateur. A new solution was introduced by Texas Instruments (TI); after creating some designs for mobile
purposes, they developed a chip including all types of protection and the power transistors. Originally that chip
was intended for use in the television industry, to be included in flat screen televisions.
